With AGLAUROS and HERSE, one of three daughters of KEKROPS, the legendary first king of Athens. They are known collectively as the Kekropidai. The sisters are given by ATHENA a box or basket containing the infant ERECHTHEUS, snake-child of HEPHAESTUS and GAIA and told to look after it, and not look inside. Pandrosos obeys these instructions, but Aglauros and Herse, overcome by curiosity, peer inside. A furious Athena drives them mad and they throw themselves from the Acropolis. Pandrosos is spared
