The mythical inventor of writing and mathematics and, according to the Book Of The Dead, a 'lord of right and truth'. He is a moon god whose major cult centre was Hermopolis: the Greeks associated Thoth with HERMES. At Hermopolis, he was worshipped with the head of a baboon, though elsewhere he is pictured with the head of an ibis. Both are his sacred animals. In Hermopolis his spouse was NEHMETAWY. He is the god of magic and the dead, healing, wisdom, judgement and patron of scribes. His female counterpart is SESHAT, his wife MA'AT. Thoth is known as ESHMUN among Semitic peoples
